Jewish primary school raises money for those affected by Australian wildfires

Jewish primary school children in London have held a cake sale to raise money for those affected by the fires still raging across Australia.

Pupils at Nancy Reuben Primary School helped bake the cakes and sold them in the school hall to help one of the many communities struggling to cope with devastating bushfires in the east of the country.

The idea originated with one of the school’s teachers, who comes from Australia, but the students’ dedication made it happen, and they send their donation together with cards sending well-wishes Down Under.

Headteacher Anthony Wolfson said: “This project provided a great opportunity for us to connect the children with the awful situation they have been hearing about in the news, whilst teaching them that no matter what the distance is between our communities, it is still possible to show we care.”

An area the size of England has been scorched since the fires first began in September. Since then at least 30 people have been killed, thousands of homes destroyed and hundreds of thousands of animals lost in a crisis made worse by record temperatures, drought and climate change.
