Leopoldstadt and Fiddler on the Roof scoop gongs at Olivier Awards
Sir Tom Stoppard’s play won two gongs while a revival of the classic yiddish tale took home one, at the virtual awards ceremony
Sir Tom Stoppard’s play about a Jewish family in Vienna has won two Olivier Awards while a revival of Fiddler on the Roof also took home a prize at a virtual awards ceremony on Sunday.
Leopoldstadt, which was produced by Sonia Friedman and premiered in January at the Wyndham Theatre in London, won Best New Play while cast member Adrian Scarborough won Best Supporting Actor.
Czech-born Stoppard, who in the 1990s found out that he had Jewish grandparents who were killed in the Holocaust, set his play in Vienna in the early half of the 20th century, and said it derived in part from his own family research.
Another Friedman production, her revival of the Broadway classic Fiddler On The Roof, which had a limited run at the Playhouse theatre before lockdown, won Best Musical Revival.
