London mosque to host Shoah exhibition after Golders Green cancellation

Yad Vashem-supported 'Love Your Neighbour' event on Muslim heroes of the Holocaust will now take place in Redbridge

A London mosque is to host the Yad Vashem-supported exhibition on Muslim heroes of the Holocaust after its cancellation by the Centre for Islamic Understanding in Golders Green.

The Love Your Neighbour exhibit will take place in Redbridge on 20 January, though the venue and organisers are being kept under wraps for fear of a repeat of the campaign that led to the Golders Green hub scrapping their event.

Faith Matter’s Fiyaz Mughal, who is supporting the event, said: “Thankfully, the exhibition on Muslims who saved Jews is being held in Redbridge. There is some fantastic work being done in the Borough to bring together communities.

“After calls for the boycott of the prestigious Yad Vashem which honours the memory of 6 million murdered Jews, this is a great way to say that those who seek to divide communities with boycotts of Holocaust centres, that they will not win”.

Roshan Salih, editor of 5Pillars and a contributor to Iranian station Press TV, led the campaign against Golders Green mosque hosting the exhibit because of the involvement of Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust museum. The story was later picked up by Iranian media.

Saliah posted a statement on Twitter issued by Golders Green mosque, which says the event was cancelled as they “didn’t know of the international connections some organisations had or of the political affiliations … Once that was made clear the event was cancelled.” They added the centre “has no connections to any foreign government and stays well clear of anything political or perceived to be political.”

Ilford North MP Wes Streeting tweeted that he is “delighted another mosque is hosting” the event.
