Lord Sacks awarded Becket Fund’s Canterbury Medal

Former chief rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks has won the Becket Fund’s annual Canterbury Medal for “refusing to render to Caesar that which is God’s.”

Sacks, Emeritus Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth, joins a distinguished list of past medalists including archbishops, ambassadors and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel.

In a statement, the Becket Fund said 25-time author Sacks was an influential figure in the world religious community and a staunch advocate for Judaism and faith in general, adding: “His persistent defense for his faith makes him a most deserving recipient.”

Sacks said he was “deeply honored and humbled” to have been given the award, adding: “The Becket Fund’s important work makes this world a little freer, and allows each of us, in our own way, to light up the public square with the candle and the flame of faith.”
