Macron issues warning to Netanyahu over his planned reforms of Israeli judiciary

French officials confirm that at meeting in Paris, the Israeli PM was told if he went ahead with reforms 'Paris should conclude that Israel has emerged from a common conception of democracy'

French President Emmanuel Macron has issued a stern warning to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about his proposed overhaul of the judicial system.

The pair met at the Elysee Palace in talks which saw Macron and the Israeli PM both agree on the danger of the Iranian nuclear programme.

But following the meeting, French officials briefed to respected newspaper Le Monde, that the French PM had also warned that if the overhaul of Israel’s judicial system goes ahead:“Paris should conclude that Israel has emerged from a common conception of democracy.”

Macron’s words were later confirmed by a French officialto The Times of Israel.

It was also confirmed that at the meeting, Macron “expressed bluntly” that the proposed judicial shakeup table “threatens to break the power of the Supreme Court, the only institutional counter-power in the government.”

Ahead of the meeting,French President Emmanuel Macron’s office said he planned to share France’s “solidarity with Israel in the face of terrorism,”.

They added he would also stress “the need for everyone to avoid measures likely to feed the spiral of violence.”

Macron also is offering to help revive long-stalled dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians.

Pro-Palestinian activists plan a protest in Paris on Saturday to decry Macron’s decision to host Netanyahu.
