Maldives ban Israelis over war with Hamas in Gaza
Israelis in Maldives have been advised to consider leaving following the announcement.
Israelis will be barred from visiting the Maldives as a show of “solidarity” with Palestinians.
“The Cabinet decision includes amending necessary laws to prevent Israeli passport holders from entering the Maldives and establishing a Cabinet subcommittee to oversee these efforts. Additionally, in the case of Palestine and Israel, the President decided to appoint a special envoy to assess Palestinian needs,” a statement from Maldives said.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry responded to the announcement, calling on Israelis not to visit the country.
“For Israeli citizens already in the country, it is recommended to consider leaving, because if they find themselves in distress for any reason, it will be difficult for us to assist,” the Foreign Ministry ministry said.
Some 11,000 Israeli tourists visited the islamic island last year, or the equivalent of 0.6% of the total amount of tourists.
Israelis have been warned not to visit a number of countries since October 7 over fears that their security might be in jeopardy.
