The Tel Aviv station for Israel’s medical emergency organisation Magen David Adom (MDA) has been named after a British man who spent years raising thousands of pounds for Israeli ambulances.

At an official ceremony this week, the family of Irving Carter were in the Israeli cosmopolitan hub to hear tributes to their father and grandfather who was one of the first people in the Jewish community to die from Covid in April 2020, aged 76.

Alongside MDA director-general Eli Bin and other senior figures were Irving’s daughter Susie, his son Malcolm, his grandson, and the chief executive of MDA in the UK, Daniel Burger.

“Thanks to Irving Carter z”l and his family’s generous donations, over the years MDA teams have treated hundreds of thousands of patients all around Israel,” the organisation said.

“In addition to building the MDA Station in Mitzpe Adi and the protective shelter in the Ramat Beit Shemesh station, Irving and his family donated ambulances, mobile intensive care units, medi-cycles and off road vehicles.”

Irving and his family often visited Israel and in their most recent visit donated a supervisor vehicle which is used by the experienced paramedics in the Carmel region. During the ceremony, the vehicle was officially dedicated and a certificate was gifted to the family for their long standing support and generosity.

“My father loved MDA very much and saw the utmost value to their activities,” said Susie. “MDA was his favourite charity and each time he visited Israel, which he did at least twice a year, a visit to MDA was always part of the plan. My brother Malcolm and I are continuing his legacy and giving towards saving lives.”

Burger said: “Thank to Carter’s outstanding generosity, he was the first and only person from overseas to receive honorary membership to MDA’s Directorate. The importance of saving lives was one of his greatest values and he made sure to pass this on to his children and grandchildren”.

Bin called Irving “a modest and humble man who held saving lives as his highest value”, adding: “He both directly and indirectly impacted the lives of hundreds and thousands of Israelis and his modesty and character were exceptional.”
