Motion tabled condemning ‘appalling rise in antisemitism’ during Israel-Gaza war

The Liberal Democrats foreign affairs spokesperson Layla Moran has tabled an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons condemning the “appalling rise in antisemitism” in the UK earlier this year as a result of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

The motion adds it is “shameful that in the UK, British Jews often suffer when violence flares up in a region thousands of miles away.”

It includes figures recorded by the Community Security Trust which showed that between May 8 and June 7 this year there were 628 antisemitic hate incidents recorded.

The EDM notes “with further concern that this represents roughly four times the normal number (of incidents) expected during this period.”

The text ends by saying parliament should “continue to call out all injustices in the Middle East and seek for a peaceful solution to the Israeli Palestinian conflict.”

Moran – who is of Palestinian descent herself – has previously delivered emotional speeches in the Commons calling for an end to violence on both sides.

In May, she read out the names of Palestinian children killed in the most recent conflict.

Her EDM is submitted by six other parliamentarians including Hywel Williams, Ben Lake and Liz Saville-Roberts of Plaid Cymru, and fellow Lib Dem’s Wera Hobhouse and Alison Thewliss of the SNP.

Caroline Lucas has also added her name as a signatory of the EDM.

EDMs are motions for which no days of debate have been fixed yet.
