A new United Synagogue community founded by several young families is to open in north Hendon with an emphasis on children’s programming.

Magen Avot will launch this weekend with a full programme of Shabbat services, including two separate children services and shiurim, as well as a weekly Kiddush and Shabbat Mincha and Maariv.

“We are structuring our timings to be both singles and family friendly as we are looking to build a community of people,” said co-founder Yoni Weisz. “The value of our children’s programming is as important as the value of our services provided.”

Weisz explained why the group had decided to set up a new shul, saying: “The area has grown rapidly over the last 5 years and we want to build a community that represents that growing population and make it relevant to them.”

While searching for a permanent rabbi and venue, it will operate from Hendon Hall Hotel off Parson Street, and Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis will provide halachic guidance.

Stephen Pack, president of the United Synagogue, said: “The values of Magen Avot fit in perfectly with the US and we are truly looking forward to watching the community grow.”
