NUS candidate suspended and reinstated over ‘King Bibi’ comment

Footage circulated online of the candidate saying: 'Congrats to King Bibi, big mazeltov to him for his successful re-election in Israel yesterday.'

An NUS candidate who celebrated Benjamin Netanyahu’s win on-stage at a student conference has been reinstated after a complaint lodged against him resulted in a temporary suspension.

Footage circulated online of Jack Morewood shows the University of Exeter undergraduate telling his audience: “Congrats to King Bibi, big mazeltov to him for his successful re-election in Israel yesterday.”

Morewood, who is running to be student director, drew criticism, with a Twitter user urging NUS to take action against him for “congratulating a FAR FACIST [sic] LEADER.”

The student was suspended pending a conduct investigation earlier today and has since been reinstated.

A spokesperson for NUS told the Jewish Chronicle that “following completion of that code of conduct investigation earlier today, Jack Morewood’s suspension was lifted and he is therefore a candidate in the elections taking place today”.
