State of Israel must be recognised, says Palestinian ambassador

Mahmoud Abbas and Haniyeh reached an agreement between their parties, ending a four-year-old rift.

A research paper co-authored by the Palestinian Ambassador to the UK has argued Israel would need to be recognised as a Jewish state by the Palestinians for a successful two-state solution to be achieved.

The document was written by Ambassador Professor Manual Hassassian and Prof. Raphael Cohen-Almagor of Hull University’s Middle East Study Group and published late last week in BICOM journal Fathom.

They argue a successful two-state solution depends on mutual recognition, such that “Israel shall recognise the State of Palestine, and Palestine should recognise the Jewish State of Israel”.

The acknowledgement Palestinians will need to recognise Israel as a Jewish state is a marked progression from the public thinking of leader Mahmoud Abbas.
