Jewish primary to host Muslim fast-breaking ‘Peace on a Plate’ event

A pluralist Jewish primary school in Essex is to bring the area’s different religions together to celebrate Middle Eastern food to break the Ramadan fast, whilst calling for peace in the region.

Clore Tikva School in Barkingside is to host Muslims and Jews as well as members of other faiths at the event on Wednesday, with cooking from Jordanian chef Batool Tawfiq, a co-founder of Kitchen Rituals.

It is the first in a series of keynote events, called ‘Peace on a Plate,’ which promotes peace through food, and organisers made reference to the backdrop or recent terror attacks across the country.

“The poignancy of the event cannot be greater,” a spokesman said. “If this heralds greater understanding then we can live together in harmony.”

They added that participants will be encouraged to “tell stories, share recipes and prepare, cook and eat together”. There will also be music and stories, and a joint Iftar to celebrate the end of the fast day of Ramadan.
