Premier Division champions stunned by new boys HMH

Last season’s Premier Division champions Hendon suffered a shock 5-1 home defeat by newboys HMH as the new season got off with a bang.

HMH’s first game in the MGBSFL produced one of the biggest ever results as they thrashed the reigning champions.

Adam Abadi helped himself to a hat-trick, with Dom Feldman and Clark Norton also on target in the most impressive of wins.

Manager Avi Goldberg, who has managed most of the team through the academy since they were 14, told jewishnews.co.uk: “Our first outing in men’s football couldn’t have been more daunting facing an away trip to league champions and charity shield holders Hendon. The guys came primed and ready for action and took the game to Hendon from the start and it soon paid dividends. I could not have been more pleased with the whole squad’s performance this early in the season.”

Dovi Fehler scored for Hendon, for whom manager Jordan Sapler told jewishnews.co.uk: “It wasn’t our best day at the office today. HMH are a very, very good team who will be challenging for the title come the end of the season but when you’re playing against yourselves and a good team it’s never going to end well.

“We lost Simon Peterman to injury at centre-back after the first two minutes. From then on it went downhill, we conceded two penalties inside the first 25 minutes and then they scored a great team goal in the seconds before half-time after Zack Lewis went close with our only notable effort in the half.

“We came out the second half much better, playing well against their press but conceded a fourth goal against the run of the game with another poor mistake. From then on they sat back and we took over, their keeper made a number of good saves and their defence some good blocks before Dovi scored a great lob.

“In the final moments they scored another. On the run of play 5-1 is not a reflection of the game. There were very few actual chances during the whole game but when you make four mistakes and the opposition score from them then its always tough.

“Two positives to take are seeing Yehuda Korman back on the pitch, he was superb on his return from injury and a big boost to the squad and the second was a great finish from Dovi.

“We’ll come back and show just how good we can be on the day but best of luck to HMH and their team for the rest of the season.”

MACCABI LONDON LIONS 3 FAITHFOLD A 2
Lions also claimed an opening day win as they won this five-goal thriller thanks to Daniel Green’s double and Adam Arnold’s strike.

Lions manager Sam Marchant told jewishnews.co.uk: “We didn’t come out the blocks today as we’d have liked, and perhaps gave our opponents too much time and space early on allowing them to keep possession. But once we scored our goal, we settled and really controlled the game and deservedly were 3-0 up.

“We began to get a bit complacent towards the end of the game and conceded from a set piece and a sloppy pass in our final third. However, we’ve started the season as we wanted, with three points and we keep focusing and aim to do the same next weekend.”

Prolific striker Adam Ellis began this season where he ended last – as he grabbed a match-winning hat-trick to steer the hosts to an opening day win.

FAIRLOP 0 JEWDINESE 0
Something of a rarity in Jewish football as the sides played out a goalless draw.

Fairlop manager Aaron Dias told jewishnews.co.uk: “I would say it was an OK start to life in Division One, we dealt with their attack very well, limiting them only to a few set piece chances, but at the same time we struggled to get out of second gear and really playing the expansive football we have been playing in pre-season. A point against a side who are supposedly going to be challenging us for the title.

“Lots of positives to take but overall a disappointing start to the season. But if they really are the second best team in this division, then I take back what I said last week, we won’t win the league by February, we’ll have it won before the winter break.”

Jewdinese manager Darren Lawrence told jewishnews.co.uk: “I’m proud of everyone involved today. It was a tough way to start the season, away to the Division Two champions, but we held our own, didn’t show them too much respect and gradually got a foothold in the game.

“It’s a point we’ll happily take and will look to build on. One big positive I’ve taken away from this game is our centre-back pairing. They were both rocks at the back. I doubt they’ll be a striker in the league who will get the better of these two.”

NORTH LONDON RAIDERS A 3 REDBRIDGE JEWISH CARE A 4
Two goals from Nate Kashket, along with strikes from Karl Dobrin and Steve Summers scored saw Redbridge edge this seven-goal thriller.

Redbridge manager Sam Rank told jewishnews.co.uk: “We deserved the win today, with their quality, commitment for each other, and putting there bodies on line. Raiders will definitely be up there at the end of the season.

“The boys did their jobs brilliant today. The defence and the midfield was solid. Special mention to Adam Noble man marking job on Liron Mannie in the second half. Didn’t have second to turn anywhere.

“I asked the boys to give a performance that they now they can do and be proud off, and was brilliant to see. Great to see all work on the training field paying off and three points in the bad.”

Liron Mannie scored twice for Raiders, with player-manager Jake Yudelowitz also on target. He told jewishnews.co.uk: “We controlled the game, not sure how we didn’t win this – there was a blatant handball on the goal line which denied me a second. Plenty of positives to take with their goals, apart from a great free-kick, coming on the counter resulting from our mistakes. A good showing in our first competitive game together. Shana Tova and Up The Raiders!”

An entertaining encounter ended in a share of the spoils as four goals couldn’t separate the sides.

Adam Hersh scored twice for the hosts, with a Green’s spokesman telling jewishnews.co.uk: “Extremely disappointed with the result but we saw just how much potential we have, which is very encouraging.”

Player-manager Ricky Lawrence and Zack Neiman scored for SPEC, with Lawrence telling jewishnews.co.uk: “After a very poor first half display, we started the second half looking like a completely different team and although on one hand we probably came away slightly disappointed not to take all three points, the draw was very much the fair result.

“Faithfold B looked unstoppable in the first half and should have been out of sight at half-time. The second half we were on top and I can’t imagine they would complain about having to share the points on this occasion.”

FC TEAM 1 MILL HILL DONS 4
A hat-trick from Zach Cohen saw The Dons claim an impressive opening day win.

Joseph Reece was also on target for the victorious visitors, for whom manager Brandon Hamme told jewishnews.co.uk: “It was a fantastic performance from the boys, they all put a proper shift in and we got the result we deserved. We look both solid at the back and deadly going forward. We have such desire flowing through the team, the boys are so determined to make a success of this season. We don’t want to be just missing out on promotion like last year, we are developing a ruthless side to our play and I hope that we can continue these performances into the next few weeks. Lots of positives to take forward but we must not get complacent, we know Redbridge won’t be pushovers. It’s a marathon and not a sprint, we will take each game as it comes and not fear anyone. Full credit to FC Team today who were resilient and hard to break down especially in the first half.”

Team player-manager Mitch Young told jewishnews.co.uk: “Congratulations to MH Dons, they were the better team and deserved the victory. They should have taken promotion to the higher league and I was surprised they didn’t and any team that finishes above them this season will win the league.

“We battled well and at half-time were in the game at 1-1. We missed a couple of easy chances and decisions didn’t go our way including a very very soft penalty.

“We lost the game during a crazy 15-minute spell and this is when we had our right-back and center-back off the pitch through injury. However, on the ball we were poor and we couldn’t get our strikers in the game. Lots to improve on and work on but an enjoyable contest.”

HERTSWOOD VALE 2 TEMPLE FORTUNE 1
Vale got its season off to a winning start as first half goals from James Millet and Harry Graham, coupled with an 85th minute penalty save from debutant Adam Zaidman secured them the three points.

Taking the lead from the penalty spot in the 18th minute, Millet tucking home having been fouled in the box, Graham then doubled their lead 10 minutes before half-time, smashing home with a great left-footed finished from a fine Millet through-ball.

The second half though would prove to be a different affair. Fortune halved the deficit, capitalising on a Vale error, and although the hosts then had chances to kill off the game, needed their debutant goalkeeper to earn them the win as he pulled off a top stop.

Vale’s Jacob Emanuel told jewishnews.co.uk: “Going into the game, we knew that we’d be playing a very different side to the one that we beat in a preseason friendly the week before.

“After a quality first half where we completely controlled play, we’ve let ourselves down in the second half and almost paid the price for it. Having said that, I’m very proud of the boys that played today, and ultimately, we got a very deserved three points in the end. We’re going to see a big improvement from the Vale in the coming weeks.”

Danny Vandermolen scored for Fortune, for whom manager Simon Linden told jewishnews.co.uk: “We was very unlucky to not come away with a point after a very good second half. Considering the fact that this was the first real chance I have been able to the get this new look Fortune side together, I cannot complain.

“We battled hard, didn’t give in and pushed them all the way. Hertswood are one of the favourites and we was unlucky, we will get better as the weeks go on.”

SCRABBLE B 0 NORTH LONDON RAIDERS MASTERS 0
Like with London buses, you wait for one and then another one comes along… the second goalless draw of the morning seeing both sides begin their campaign with a point.

Scrabble joint-manager Jon Yantin told jewishnews.co.uk: “It was a good solid hard game underpinned by the masters on each side.”

Raiders joint-manager James Cartmell told jewishnews.co.uk: “Both sides had decent chances and a draw was about the right result. There were definitely positives, including good possession and the clean sheet, and we will look to build on this next week and going forward. We will improve.”

His co-manager Jonny Blain told jewishnews.co.uk: “It was a tough game against familiar opposition… we shaded it and missed a glorious opportunity in the first-half and hit the post in the second half. If we’d have nicked it, I don’t think anyone would have been surprised but fair play to Scrabble who were as organised and tough to break down as ever.”
