Producers seek funds for North London IDF soldier film

A British former IDF soldier is raising funds for a short film that would tell the story of a serviceman growing up in the UK’s Jewish community.

Jonah Moore is hoping to attract support for a crowdfunding campaign to make the film Soldier Boy with producer colleague Keren Shefet.

It would tell the story of David, a Jewish boy who escapes to London after realising IDF service is not for him – but his plan to tell his family proves impossible when he arrives home to an outlandish surprise party.

The team behind the proposed film says it is based on the personal experiences of Moore and others in being a lone soldier.

It would be directed by Tal Cicurel.

They have so far raised around a fifth of £10,000 target, which would cover production and marketing expenses, ahead of the planned start of shooting this winter.

The team’s crowdfunding page says: “Growing up in the Jewish community in London, everyone grows up being taught one thing by their school and their family, but when they go to university, start working or even like Jonah, join the army, you then learn that you need to form your own voice.

“However, the great thing about being Jewish is there is no right way to be a Jew.

“Through the medium of humour, we hope this film will encourage all minority voices to be listened to within the Jewish community and raise meaningful discussions about Jewish identity around the diaspora.”
