Pupils have high hopes their giant 80,000-piece chanukiah is a record breaker

Colossal 18-foot structure at Gesher school could be crowned world's tallest.

Students at Gesher school have high hopes their colossal 18-foot, 80,000 piece LEGO chanukiah will be crowned the world’s tallest.

The pupils from Pinner are awaiting news from the Guinness Book of Records after completing the giant year-long project led by teaching assistant and former LEGO employee, Danny Cazzato.

Students built the nine candles and supporting structure before an official LEGO ‘master-builder’ glued everything together and attached it in Gesher’s main hall, where it was officially unveiled by the Chief Rabbi this week. He  presented students with their own Chanukiah mini-models to build at home.

Tamaryn Yartu, Gesher’s co-headteacher, said: “It was really important for us that the Chanukiah was made from LEGO because it’s something that our students really love. It was also fantastic to have the Chief Rabbi visit and officially cut the ribbon.”

One Gesher student said: “I can’t believe how tall it is! It’s good we got to build the candles before it was finished. I wouldn’t want to put them on the top now!”

Gesher is a school for students with a range of mild to moderate special educational needs.
