Rabbinic couple return to Hampstead Garden Suburb in top role
Rabbi Marc and Rebbetzen Lisa Levene will take over in the summer after being overwhelmingly voted for by the congregation’s members on the weekend.
A former assistant rabbi of Hampstead Garden Suburb United Synagogue is to return to the community in the top job.
Rabbi Marc and Rebbetzen Lisa Levene will take over in the summer after being overwhelming voted for by the congregation’s members on the weekend.
The appointment marks a return to HGSS, after having served as its community assistant rabbi from 2012-17. After leaving that role five years ago, the rabbinic couple, who have four girls, served at Belmont United Synagogue.
Rabbi Marc Levene said: “Lisa and I are delighted to be returning to HGSS. We are excited to ensure that it continues to be a flagship shul of Anglo Jewry.
“Our primary focus will be to connect and engage with all members ensuring that everyone finds their unique space and place within such a diverse and vibrant community!
“We will be sad to say goodbye to our wonderful Belmont Family, and appreciate their support, love and guidance that helped us to grow and flourish as educators and spiritual leaders.”
James Kaufmann, Chair of Hampstead Garden Suburb Synagogue, said he is “thrilled” by the appointment. adding their “warmth, enthusiasm and dynamism is evident to us all.”
Rabbi Levene is from Borehamwood has a background in youth work and supporting troubled young people. He serves on the Executive of the Rabbinical Council of the United Synagogue. Rebbetzen Lisa Levene is from Pinner, has qualifications in psychology and management, and has worked in consulting and in the city. She received accreditation in counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy, and founded her own consultancy firm.
