Rainbow Jews LGBT project faces closure

A project chronicling Jewish lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) history from 1950 has appealed for money to keep going after its funding has run out.

Rainbow Jews, which recently ran an exhibition capturing the oral histories of Jewish LGBT voices, was financed by a one-off grant from Heritage Lottery Fund. But a lack of money from September has threatened the rest of the project’s UK tour.

Project organisers have turned to crowd-funding to finance the continuation of their work.

“With the current cuts in public funding these days, we need further grant aid from other sources to continue our work,” said project leader Surat Knan, who is leading the campaign to raise £5,000.

Co-ordinators said the money would cover staff and exhibition costs, with plans to visit Leicester, Birmingham, Liverpool and Belfast this autumn.
