Rally set to defend Bristol ‘end Zionism’ academic
A rally today is set to defend controversial Bristol academic David Miller, with support from group linked to John McDonnell
A rally is set to take place at Bristol University this afternoon to defend controversial Bristol academic David Miller with the support of a group linked to former Shadow Chancellor, John McDonnell.
Miller sparked condemnation across the Jewish community after calling for an end to Zionism, and accusing the university’s J-Soc of being “pawns of Israel.”
A demonstration outside the university’s Wills Memorial Building to express “solidarity and support for Professor Miller”.
Among the organisations named in support of the rally include the left-wing Labour Representation Committee – whose president is former Shadow Chancellor, John McDonnell MP.
McDonnell has been contacted for comment by Jewish News.
“The group of hard left extremists about to descend on Bristol, in an apparent show of support for Professor Miller, should not be allowed to step foot on campus,” a spokesperson for Labour Against Antisemitism told The Tab Bristol.
“Instead of prioritising student welfare, Bristol University have shown they cannot guarantee the safety of minority groups.”
The academic is currently under investigation by Bristol University for his comments. The institution refuses to comment on the ongoing process, saying it is confidential.
Avon and Somerset Police have also launched a probe into whether a hate crime could have taken place in connection with Miller’s lectures at Bristol.
A spokesperson for the force said last week: “We have recently been made aware of a number of incidents that may constitute a hate crime or hate incident taking place during lectures at the University of Bristol.
“We take issues such as these very seriously. An email was circulated to student groups last week asking people to speak to the police regarding their experiences.”
