Two killed, eight injured in Tel Aviv gunman’s night of terror

Residents told to stay indoors after gunfire reported at different locations on Dizengoff Street on Thursday night

Two people have been confirmed dead after a gunman opened fire at different locations along a downtown Tel Aviv street on Thursday night.

Israeli emergency responders said eight others were injured in the attack, with three in a serious condition.

Video shared on social media showed people running to escape the scene at Dizengoff Street, one of the city’s busiest areas for bars and restaurants that was packed with people.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible, although it follows terror incident in several other Israeli cities by attackers using guns, knives and vehicles as weapons.

Police in Tel Aviv called on people to stay indoors and stay away from windows. Witnesses described policemen running through the city streets, guns drawn.

Times of Israel reports eyewitness Evelyn Gertz, 34, who was having dinner next door to the attack, as saying: “We dove under the tables and people started crying, it was horrible. Then we ran to the back of the restaurant, there was a cop directing us. We’re now sheltering in an apartment building next to the bar we were in.”

In the past two-and-a-half weeks 11 people have been killed in attacks in other Israeli towns.

The attacks come at the beginning of Ramadan, the Muslim holiday when tensions are often heightened around prayer spaces in Jerusalem.

Israeli police and Muslim worshippers clashed for weeks around the same time last year.
