Tel Aviv is among the 10 worst cities in the world to get a good night’s sleep, according to a new study.

The survey, conducted by CIA Landlords Insurance, is ranking the best and worst cities in the world for a good night’s sleep, based on a range of factors such as air, noise and light pollution, crime rates and the quality of green spaces.

The survey ranks Tel Aviv fourth on the list of the worst cities to get a good night’s, only surpassed by Bogotá in Colombia, Santiago in Chile and Athens in Greece.

Tel Aviv is doing particularly bad on the categories of “safety walking alone at night” and “level of crime.” While the survey doesn’t mention this, people in Tel Aviv have suffered from increasing construction noise all across town in recent years, causing great distress for most of its residents.

Bern in Switzerland has been named the best city in the world for a good night’s sleep, followed by Reykjavik in Iceland, Helsinki in Finland, and Vienna in Austria.

“Our environment plays a very important part in how well we sleep at night. Landlords – particularly those in the worst-ranking cities on our list – should consider taking steps to make their properties as sleep-friendly as possible for tenants,” Richard Wayman, Finance Director at CIA Landlord Insurance, said.

“This could include things like installing double glazing and sealing any gaps to block out noise, hanging blackout curtains or blinds to stop light getting in, fitting air filters or purifiers to reduce pollutants and allergens, and making sure all locks on doors and windows are secure so tenants feel safe at night,” he added.

The survey also lists a number of tips to get a better night’s sleep, such as making time to relax, practicing good sleep hygiene, getting enough exercise, and avoiding electronics before bed.
