Team GB scoop close to 100 medals at 2019 European Maccabi Games in Budapest

Over 200 British athletes and managers have just returned from Budapest where they faced teams from around the world at the European Maccabi Games.

British participants faced competition from 2,200 athletes in the week-long tournament, which takes place every four years, and attended a special shabbat service.

The US delegation claimed the most medals, securing 155 in total, followed by Hungary and Germany.

Team GB won 96 medals, including 44 gold, 30 silver and 22 bronze, across a range of sports such as fencing, swimming, golf and football.

Tennis champion Alan Rechtman scooped three medals, including two gold, one silver and one bronze, receiving congratulations from his team. “We are so proud to have such an experienced and respectful person in our Maccabi GB Family,” the team wrote on Facebook.

Swimmer Chloe Jacobs brought back four gold medals for 50 butterfly open swimming, 50 backstroke open swimming, 100 backstroke open swimming and 100 fly open swimming.

Meanwhile in fencing, Oliver Strange and Ethan Zazo won between them ten medals, including five gold medals, three silver and two bronze, receiving praise from Team GB on Facebook.

“We have to say a special thank you to Richard Bernstein, the manager and coach, who has been there not only for his athletes but for anyone who needed! Thank you for being an amazing part of Team Maccabi GB,” the team wrote on Facebook.

GB Manager Joel Nathan said: “It has been an absolute pleasure coming to Budapest and representing Maccabi Great Britain at the European Maccabi Games in such a wonderful city. Thank you to the Hungarians and all of their people for welcoming us to this beautiful city.’’
