GADGET REVIEW

Tech That: Ember Mug² – ✡✡✡

Is the smart self-heating mug actually that smart?

Available from: Ember.com, Amazon, Curry’s, Argos

RRP: from £74.95

What is it?

The Ember Mug² is a smart self-heating mug which can be temperature controlled via an app on your smartphone.

Plus points

·         The design is sleek, modern and unlike any other mug you probably own

·         It does a great job of keeping your drinks hot, well after you’ve forgotten about them

·         Customisable LED light at the front shows you the mug’s status, eg charging or low battery

·         Comes in different sizes and colours. You can even get a travel-mug version.

·         Battery life is around 90 minutes, which is enough for 1-2 cups of tea/coffee

·         Companion app for Android and iOS allows you to control the temperature of the mug manually or choose from a range of pre-set modes

Nil points

·         It may be on the pricey side for some

·         The Ember app has poor reviews on both Android and iOS. Unfortunately, they were substantiated. The mug would constantly lose Bluetooth connection with my phone, and I’d have to pair it each time. It’s not the biggest hassle but needs fixing for such an expensive product.

·         Mug² isn’t dishwasher-safe, which may disappoint some

Verdict

✡ ✡ ✡

Ember Mug² is by far the best self-heating mug out there in terms of design and functionality. Whilst the buggy app shouldn’t be a deal breaker, it does need to be fixed and maybe then it would get a perfect 5 from me.
