The students union at the University of Toronto has apologised after an official told a student it would not support kosher food on campus because the organisation sponsoring it was “pro-Israel”.

The Kosher Forward Campaign, by the University’s Hillel, would go against the “will of the membership”, said the external commissioner of the Graduate Student Union, who was later said to have “intended no harm”.

In 2012, the union voted to support the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement, but on Sunday the union was forced to apologise for the “harm caused” by the commissioner’s comments in an email to a student.

The union further added that it was as yet undecided as to whether the student union’s executive body would vote on the kosher initiative.
