MPs and peers meet filmmakers of Menachim Begin documentary
Reputation of former Irgun leader and prime minister of Israel to be revisited at series of events across London
British parliamentarians will consider the life of former Israeli premier Menachem Begin on Thursday, despite the one-time paramilitary commander having fought the British Mandate in Palestine.
Begin led the Irgun from 1943-48, during which time it bombed the British administrative headquarters at the King David Hotel, killing 91.
His life is now being revisited in a new film called ‘From Destruction to Redemption: The Menachem Begin Story,’ which has been supported by senior figures from the US, the UK and Israel.
Among these is Rob Schwartz, former chief-of-staff to former US Senator Joe Lieberman, who has been in the UK this week, addressing audiences at South Hampstead United Synagogue and Mill Hill Synagogue, before speaking to MPs and peers at the House of Lords on Thursday.
Joining Schwartz in the British capital was Herzl Markov of the Menachem Begin Heritage Centre, Quilliam co-founder and author Ed Husain, and incoming JNF president Bruce Gould.
The former prime minister was a controversial figure, having been leader of the Irgun when it perpetrated the Deir Yassin Massacre, killing 107 Palestinian men, women and children.
