Training day run for trade unionists opposed to boycotts of Israel

Pro-Palestinian protesters call for a boycott on Israeli goods in central London.

Israeli diplomats and trade unionists taught pro-Israel members of British trade unions how to defend the Jewish state against “delegitimisation” on Sunday, in the second training day organised by activists.

Campaigners from We Believe in Israel teamed up with Trade Union Friends of Israel for a seminar for those opposed to boycotts of Israel, with the Israeli embassy’s press attaché among the speakers.

“Trade unions are a key arena in the battle against boycotts and delegitimisation of Israel,” said We Believe director Luke Akehurst. “To win this battle we need to reach out and mobilise.”

TUFI director Steve Scott added: “This has been a tough task, with those who oppose peace intimidating and even banning trade unionists who want a balance in the debate.”

The seminar is being followed-up with a delegation to Israel and the West Bank in February organised by TUFI for six “key” grassroots trade union activists.
