TV station sorry for using yellow star to illustrate Yom Kippur

The station was quick to apologise, with general manager Greg Easterly saying: “We are deeply embarrassed… Ignorance is not an excuse.”

An American TV station has apologised for using Holocaust imagery to visualise a news segment about Yom Kippur.

Chicago-based WGN-TV showed a yellow Star of David with the word ‘Jude’ appearing against the striped background of a camp uniform, as the station’s anchor discussed the High Holy Days on Tuesday.

The station was quick to apologise, with general manager Greg Easterly saying: “We are deeply embarrassed… Ignorance is not an excuse.”

Marc Karlinsky, editor at the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin who alerted the station, later said: “Let this be a good lesson to all us editors/producers who pick photos on tight deadlines.”

Another viewer took to Twitter to complain, saying: “This is what happens when you hire 19yr old interns who learn social justice instead of history in schools. Pathetic.”
