Tzipi Livni could become the first Israeli to serve as deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, it has been claimed.
The former Israeli foreign minister received a call from new UN chief Antonio Guterres asking her to take on the role this weekend, Haaretz reported.
It follows a one to one meeting between the pair in New York last month. Any appointment would have to be backed by the Security Council but Livni’s office reportedly said no formal offer had yet been received.
On Friday, America blocked Guterres’ appointment of Salam Fayyad, the former Palestinian prime minister, as the UN’s Libya envoy. It’s UN envoy didn’t approve of the signals such an appointment would give out.
Livni’s Hatnuah party joined forces with Labour to form the Zionist Union ahead of the 2013 elections.
Livni, who has led multiple rounds of peace talks with the Palestinians, has been targeted during visits to the UK by Palestinian activists seeking to prosecute Israeli officials for alleged war crimes, following her time as israel’s foreign minister during the 2009 Gaza conflict.
Her visit three years ago was afforded special mission status by the foreign office.
