Uber driver who shouted ‘kill all the Jews’ handed suspended sentence
An Über driver who shouted “kill all the Jews” during a bout of road rage has received a 28 week suspended sentence.
Rashal Miah, 36, verbally attacked Orthodox Jews after getting stuck in traffic in Stamford Hill in September 2014.
He directed racial abuse at the driver of a bus of Orthodox Jewish children, asking him “what right do you have to tell me what to do in this country?”, according to the Hackney Gazette.
Miah received a 26 week suspended sentence at Snaresbrook Crown Court on 4 March, for using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear or provoke violence. Two extra weeks were added for arriving at court late, and he is also required to attend an Anger Management course, do 100 hours unpaid work & pay a £980 fine.
According to volunteer neighbourhood watch group Shomrim, the victim of the crime said: “I welcome the sentence, it sends out a strong message to anti-Semites that prejudice and bigotry is not acceptable”.
Judge Murray Shanks described his language as ‘horrible’, according to ITV News. They said: “I accept this was mainly driven by you being wrongly angry and suffering from road rage”. Shanks added: “I hope it doesn’t indicate some underlying prejudice.”
“If this was the other way round and Muslims were being insulted I have a good feeling you would feel strongly. You need to understand that before you open your mouth.”
Following the decision, Uber, the private transportation company, have removed the driver.
