Ukrainian jazz singer Golda lights up the London stage

Ukrainian singer Tetyana Amirova changed her name to Golda when she was 22, because she always wanted to have a Jewish name. She was born in Odesa 30 years ago to an Ashkenazi mother and a Mountain Jew father and now lives in St John’s Wood.

After a solo concert at the Clapham Grand in January, where she performed jazz interpretations of key Jewish songs such as Shma Israel, Am Israel Chai and Hatikva, last month Golda brought her new show to the west end.

Golda, A Musical Story of Love, Loss and Resilience, was a heartfelt and immersive music show following the story of a young woman and war refugee as she fled home to find hope in a foreign land. Jewish News caught up with her after the show.

How was the experience of performing on the stage in central London?

It was a fantastic experience. Our entire team is profoundly grateful for this chance to open our hearts on the historic stage of Theatre Royal Haymarket, sharing our journeys through loss and transformation, and our unwavering determination to embrace life and love. Amidst the fading discourse on the war in Ukraine, it is especially significant for us to continue voicing our story.

Why was it important to you to perform in London?

For me, it’s crucial to actively share my identity, to enlighten others about our ancestral roots, rich traditions, and profound history. This is particularly important during times when it feels like our people are once again facing a tremendous tragedy and harrowing ordeal.

How were you received by the audience?

The theatre was full, I couldn’t believe it, I received an immense amount of support and love. We were able to share the tale of our time and get the audiences to connect with each character played by my incredibly talented team of Ukrainian and international artists, to relate to their tragic circumstances, vulnerabilities and fine details. Once again, I realised why I step onto the stage every time.

What’s next for Golda – where do you plan to take your music?

My greatest aspiration is to create and record my own music, bringing joy and inspiration through my artistic expressions. Next is launching my debut album in London and there is a global tour waiting for GOLDA show. My hope is that this journey will inspire a multitude of people and offer them a beacon of hope.
