United Synagogue Trustee Professor Andrew Eder has been appointed the new Chair of Trustees of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges

Eder, an Emeritus Professor and Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at UCL Eastman Dental Institute and former Pro-Vice-Provost at University College London, described the appointment as “a real privilege.”

“With the shifting political landscape there will undoubtedly be challenges ahead, but I am confident the Academy and its members are well-placed to continue to be the voice of doctors on all professional matters,” added Eder, who will take up his post on 1 April.

“The role of the Academy is to make sure that voice is heard and we, as Trustees, will ensure the Academy continues to be well run so that the Council can do its job effectively.”

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges is the coordinating body for the UK and Ireland’s 24 medical royal colleges and faculties. It ensures patients are safely and properly cared for by setting standards for the way doctors are educated, trained and monitored throughout their careers.

The Board of Trustees comprises eight members drawn from medical and non-medical fields.

Commenting on the appointment, Professor Dame Helen Stokes-Lampard, Chair of the Academy’s Council said, ‘I am delighted Andrew has been able to join us especially at such a critical time as we emerge from the pandemic and consolidate the strengthened relationships and activities that have developed over the last two years in particular.’
