US demands UN reimpose sanctions on Iran for violating nuclear deal
'No country but the United States had the courage and conviction to put forward a resolution,' Pompeo told reporters
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has called on the United Nations to impose “snapback sanctions” on Iran.
The United States withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018. The landmark agreement allows for sanctions to be reimposed if Iran violates its limits on the country’s nuclear program.
Since the U.S. withdrawal, Iran has gradually increased its levels of uranium enrichment, announcing in January it was now enriching more than it did before the deal was agreed in 2015.
But its European allies said the US does not have the power to trigger sanctions given it withdrew from the agreement.
Pompeo told reporters on Thursday: “No country but the United States had the courage and conviction to put forward a resolution. Instead, they chose to side with ayatollahs.”
