US shuls hold women-only megillah readings
Synagogues including Borehamwood and Elstree, Brondesbury Park, Bushey, Central, Golders Green, Hampstead Garden Suburb, Radlett and South Hampstead got involved
At least nine United Synagogue shuls held Women-only megillah readings during Purim last week, the organisation announced.
Once considered taboo, female-focused activities have become increasingly popular among modern orthodox communities in recent years.
Although orthodox Jewish law does not permit women to lead prayers or sing in front men, there is no prohibition against reading the traditional Purim scroll in a strictly female-only environment.
The US said synagogues that held women-only megillah readings included Borehamwood and Elstree, Brondesbury Park, Bushey, Central, Golders Green, Hampstead Garden Suburb, Radlett and South Hampstead.
Central Synagogue held its first ever women’s megillah reading, led by 18-year-old Ella Shuchman. It was followed by a champagne lunch.
