Viewers hail Call the Midwife’s ‘moving’ Holocaust-themed episode

Jewish viewers are gushing over last weekend’s episode of Call The Midwife and its touching tribute to the Holocaust.

The hit BBC1 show featured the heart-warming tale of Sammy and Orli Rosen as they prepare for the birth of their son, Joel.

Throughout the episode it’s clear that Sammy Rosen, who survived Auschwitz, is still haunted by the horrors of the Holocaust.

As he prepares for fatherhood his battle against PTSD and survivor’s guilt becomes the focus of the show.

The episode — which was written by Jewish writer Lena Rae and then checked by a Sandy Row’s synagogue congregant — sensitively explores the trauma experienced by Holocaust survivor Sammy, whilst also celebrating the traditions of British Jewry.

One delighted viewer tweeted: “very moving to see Holocaust survivors highlighted in tonight’s episode of Call the Midwife just in time for Holocaust Memorial Day this week.”

Another kvelled: “well done Call The Midwife for highlighting Holocaust Memorial Day in tonight’s episode.

“How awful to be scared to be #Jewish, I will always stand tall and proud to be #Jewish.

“If you didn’t see it, please watch it!”

One watcher even admitted that the “powerful” episode made him think of his Grandad, “what he saw, what he experienced”.

Call The Midwife star Stephen McGann responded by wishing “a quick thank you to those people who have sent such warm and moving messages to our team about last night’s Holocaust story on Call The Midwife.

“The past is for remembering, not just reminiscing. #HolocaustMemorialDay.”

The release of the show is timed to coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day which takes place on January 27th 2022.
