WATCH: Gordon Brown invokes memory of Shoah in emotional EU plea

Former PM says Europe “is at peace because of what Britain did to establish freedom across the whole of the continent”

The former PM said Europe was at peace because of Britain's leadership

Gordon Brown has invoked memories of Britain’s role in liberating Nazi concentration camps in an emotional video appeal for a vote to Remain in the upcoming EU referendum.

The message, filmed in the ruins of Coventry Cathedral, sees the former Prime Minister praise Britan’s role in helping establish “a Europe where decisions are made by dialogue, discussion and debate”.

The Labour grandee, who made a similar oratorical intervention in 2014’s Scottish Independence referendum, says Europe “is at peace because of what Britain did to establish freedom across the whole of the continent”.

Calling for Britain to go on “leading in Europe”, he adds: “Our troops walked into Bergen Belsen, exposed the horrors of the Holocaust and said we would fight, fight and fight again to end the evil of anti-Semitism across the world.”
