White powder sent to US and Israeli embassies in German capital

Police in Berlin say letters were mailed to the two buildings in late July as authorities investigate

Threatening letters containing a white powder have been sent to both the American and Israeli embassies in the German capital, police said.

Police spokeswoman Kerstin Ismer said the Israeli embassy in Berlin received a letter on July 24, with another mailed to the US embassy in the city on July 26.

Ms Ismer said police have opened two investigations on suspicion of disturbing the peace by threatening a crime.

She said both letters contained a powder, but would not comment on whether it was dangerous or not.

The spokeswoman would also not say whether the two letters were thought to be connected, or whether there were any suspects.
