The Jewish owner of a suite of high-brow magazine titles has died aged 89. Workaholic Samuel Irving Newhouse, a reclusive billionaire, inherited Advance Publications from his father and has run it since 1975. Its magazine division, Conde Nast, includes Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair and The New Yorker.

Former Israeli nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu has been invited to immigrate to Norway to live with his wife. Vanunu served 18 years in jail, most in solitary confinement, for disclosing details of Israel’s nuclear programme to the Sunday Times. His past appeals to leave the country have been denied.

A neo-Nazi rally in Sweden ended in violence and dozens of arrests but could have been much worse, after a judge agreed at the last-minute to re-route the march away from a synagogue on Yom Kippur. Marchers from the Nordic Resistance Movement were demonstrating against immigration.

Catalonia’s Jewish community was left divided on the question of independence this week, as Spanish police officers violently prevented many Catalans from voting in an independence referendum. Victor Sorenssen, the community’s leader, said Catalan Jews would not ‘be effected by a political discussion’.
