You’re hired! Lord Sugar made new government ‘enterprise tsar’

Apprentice star and peer Lord Sugar has been announced as David Cameron’s new ‘enterprise Tsar.’

The Jewish businessman will be “championing enterprise” among young people, undertaking roadshow events across England.

Lord Sugar, who in May 2015, stood down as a Labour peer because of the party’s “negative business policies and the general anti-enterprise concepts” under Ed Miliband, said he was now “delighted to be taking on this challenge” under the Conservatives. 

He added: “Not enough of our young people know about apprenticeships and what they offer, and too few feel empowered to set up their own business.”

Skills Minister Nick Boles said: “Lord Sugar has huge credibility among young people and I am delighted that he has agreed to help the government”, who plan to deliver 3 million apprenticeship starts in England by 2020. 

The Jewish entrepreneur was initially appointed as peer by the previous Labour administration in 2009.

Also announced this week, new London Mayor Sadiq Khan made five new appointments, including Jewish peer Lord Andrew Adonis as Chair of the Crossrail 2 Board.

In a statment on the Mayor’s website, Adonis is said to offer “a wealth of experience delivering major London and national transport projects.”
