Youth Director

Introduction and Background

The S&P is recruiting a Youth Director Team to work across the entire S&P community including Lauderdale Road, Bevis Marks and Wembley, with an emphasis at Lauderdale Road and to be primarily based at Lauderdale Road for Shabbat and Yom Tovim.

At S&P we believe that the community must be a warm, educational and enjoyable place where children feel welcome at all times.

With our dedicated team of rabbinic and lay leaders we want to ensure that our children and teenagers are encouraged, engaged and entertained. Events include weekly children’s services from toddlers to teenagers, special services on Yomim Tovim and extra-special social activities.

Current numbers at Lauderdale Road are 5-10 toddlers, Reception to Year 3 are 5-10 toddlers, Years 3 to 6 are 10-15 attendees. The monthly youth minyan has 20-25 attendees.

Reporting Line

The Youth Directors will report to two members of the Lauderdale Road Committee and work closely with the Rabbi of Lauderdale Road, the Senior Rabbi and the Executive Director.

Package and Benefits

This is initially a 12 month contract with potential to extend.

Accommodation is available on site for the right candidates and could form part of the package.

The package includes a combined salary of circa £20k for a minimum of 35 hours a week including evenings and weekends. There are 20 days holidays with a minimum of 4 weekends, Childcare vouchers are available and there is a workplace pension scheme.

Aim

To expand the range of religious and social activities and fully engage with the youth of all ages across the community reaching out beyond the synagogue walls and bringing in the S&P Sephardi Community values to our young people,

Main responsibilities

The Youth Directors will:-

1. Direct and operate the youth programme for S&P with an emphasis on Lauderdale Road.
2. Produce an annual plan of key activities and organise and promote those activities via all regular social media
3. To maintain the youth section of the S&P website
4. To create a communications strategy for youth and parents and reach out to new members.
5. Improve the quality of children’s and youth services on Shabbat and High Holy Days.
6. Reach out to the youth of affiliated communities with the design of joint programming.
7. To work on inter-communal activities with other local synagogues.
8. Mentor and train madrichim to support activities and coordinate youth services and programmes across four age ranges.
9. Achieve a balance between a fun and creative environment, and preservation of discipline.
10. Put on special events at key points in the calendar such as Purim, Yom Ha’atzmut, Tu B’Shevat etc as well as an ongoing programme of social activities.
11. To formally link up with the Shaare Tikva Sunday school with joint activities and programming.
12. To host children and their families regularly on Shabbat.
13. To be responsible for child protection within the youth team
14. To maintain a budget for the work with the youth.

Required Qualifications and Experience

1. Experience in youth work, including developing and implementing youth programmes and training madrichim.
2. Knowledge of child protection (training is available)
3. Good communication skills.
4. Ability to motivate youth.
5. Excellent interpersonal skills.
6. Ability to be creative and think out of the box regarding events.
7. Commitment to Orthodox Judaism and Jewish values.
