Chief rabbi’s former residence ‘valued at around £10 million’ is sold off
The United Synagogue has finally sold the chief rabbi’s former residence in St John’s Wood, which was valued at around £10 million.
Hamilton Terrace was sold on Friday, two years after Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis said he would not live in the spacious, grace-and-favour home in St John’s Wood, unlike his predecessor Lord Sacks.
Instead Mirvis and his wife Valerie said they would live in Hendon, within one of London’s biggest Jewish communities, despite chief rabbis having lived in Hamilton Terrace for more than a century.
Prior to its sale to a private buyer, the property won planning permission for significant development, after months’ worth of work.
This week, a spokesman for the organisation said the money would go towards “building vibrant, engaged communities”. US President Stephen Pack said: “We are delighted with the sale. We have committed to investing much needed funds into capital projects.”
