Man arrested for assault outside shul and anti-Semitic slurs
An 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated assault on an Orthodox Jewish man in Hackney.
The incident took place outside a synagogue by Clapton Common on Thursday night.
A police spokesperson told Jewish News: “Police were called to Clapton Common E5 on Thursday 30 July at approximately 10.40 pm to a report of an assault. officers attended and it was established a 31-year-old man had been assaulted and anti-Semitic remarks were made towards him. He was not injured.”
A 21-year-old suspect was found a short time later and arrested. “He has since been bailed pending further enquiries. Officers from the community faith unity at Hackney are investigating,” a statement said.
Shomrim followed the suspect until he was arrested. Stamford Hill Shomrim coordinator Bary Bard said: “This behaviour is totally unacceptable. Unfortunately anti-Semitic incidents are happening too often.
“Shomrim have recently facilitated many arrests, charges and successful prosecutions in relation to anti-Semitic hate crime incidents, I would like to thank the Police and the Courts for taking these incidents seriously and bringing offenders to justice.”
