£720,000 raised to support Jewish students at university
University Jewish Chaplaincy appeal raises more than £700,000 to offer students a 'safe space to express their anxieties during these tense times'
More than £700,000 was raised in just 36 hours for chaplains to support Jewish students at university.
Money raised by the campaign by University Jewish Chaplaincy, called ‘Step up for Students’ on Sunday and Monday will go towards supporting 8,500 students across more than 100 universities.
More than 3,000 people donated to the appeal, which was supported by Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams.
“It has been heartwarming to see how many people across the Jewish community have stepped up to support University Jewish Chaplaincy,” said the charity’s CEO Sophie Dunoff.
“This comes at a time when Jewish students have felt under threat, as they often do when tensions are raised in the Middle East.
“Our Chaplains advocate for Jewish students, and offer them a safe space to express their anxieties during these tense times. This also comes during the pandemic when many Jewish students dealt with disruptions to their routines, bereavement and isolation.”
There are seventeen chaplains working in twelve regions in the UK, from Exeter to Scotland.
