90 percent of French Jewish students subject to antisemitism during studies

90 percent of Jewish students polled say they experienced antisemitism at university, as first reported by L’Express

Nine in 10 Jewish students in France say they were subjected to antisemitic acts at least once during their studies, according to the weekly magazine L’Express.

A new poll conducted by the French Institute of Public Opinion (IFOP) in March for the Union of Jewish Students in France (UEJF) interviewed over 1400 students about their experiences.

Among them, some 405 Jewish students were polled.

89 percent of Jewish students polled say they were subjected to at least one antisemitic act during their studies, including tropes about Jews, jokes about the Holocaust and antisemitic acts of aggression, as first reported by the weekly magazine.

85 percent of Jewish students say they were subjected to at least one remark containing tropes about Jews.

Another 75 percent report “jokes about the Holocaust or Jews”, while a shocking 19 percent say they experienced “antisemitic aggressions.”

However, only one percent of Jewish students subjected to antisemitic acts say they pressed charges.

European Jewish Congress president Dr. Moshe Kantor said: “Unfortunately, campuses, which are supposed to be the bases of open and liberal thought have become hotbeds of hate and intolerance against Jews.

“Without the assistance and understanding of the campus authorities, law enforcement agencies and the faculties, many institutions of higher education are becoming no-go areas for Jewish students and this should shame the system.”
