First of all, I want to thank Emily for this party and for inviting me.

Honestly, it really should have been the other way around – that I would organise a party for her – but as most people here know, I’m not the most spontaneous or social person, so of course Emily had to arrange a party for herself!

I also want to thank everyone who is here today. I won’t mention names, because I might forget someone, but each and every one of you was invited here because you helped her or our family in some way… and that is truly not something to be taken for granted.

Usually when I speak in front of an audience, I do it in English. But for you, Emily, I’m making an exception today and speaking in Hebrew. I didn’t even do this at your bat mitzvah!

When you were born, the experience was very traumatic for me. You came into the world upside down, not breathing. I remember the panic in the delivery room, the minutes that felt like an eternity. Thankfully, Sue was there, and the incredible medical team managed to bring you back to life. Already then, I understood that you are a fighter.

I never thought I would have to go through another traumatic birth, but on 19 January, 2025, it happened again. With the same paralysing fear, the same nerve-racking waiting, and the same horrible question — would you live? And again, against all odds, you survived.

Another miracle happened, and here you are with us today, celebrating a rebirth and a new first birthday. And in my eyes, you are more beautiful than ever, both inside and out. Stronger, more determined, more confident, and with the ability to say exactly what you think and feel, with sensitivity and courage.

I wish Dad could understand your rebirth, be here, and be as happy as he was at your first birth.

Emily, you have managed to bring people together from so many different places, with your positive energy, your light, and your unimaginable resilience.

You always asked yourself what your true purpose was before 7th October, and today I think the answer is clear: to be a symbol of optimism, hope, and strength, not only for the people of Israel but for Jews all over the world. It’s unbelievable.

I still can’t believe that the baby who came out of me upside down is truly the incredible and inspiring woman standing in front of me today.

I am so, so happy that you are here. I am endlessly proud of who you have become, an amazing, brave, and wise woman. And I’m sure Dad would say that he is proud of you to the skies, if only he could.

Emily Tehila Damari… I love you to the moon and back.

Thank you for surviving 471 days of hell, and from now until the end of your life, I wish you only happiness, love, and peace and that all your dreams come true.

Love you, Mum
