Amsterdam bakery called ‘Anne & Frank’ changes name after backlash
Owner of the shop insists Anne Frank was a 'hero' of his and that he didn't intend to offend, after social media critics hit out
A bakery in Amsterdam called ‘Anne & Frank’ is to change its name after social media users blasted it as “tasteless”.
The owner of the business, which is located near the Anne Frank House in the Dutch capital, told local media: “It seemed like a nice name to me.”
The man, identified only as ‘Roberto,’ added that Anne Frank was “a hero” of his, saying: “It wasn’t my intention to offend anyone.”
Social media commentators said it would still have been in bad taste even if the owners were called Anne and Frank, which they aren’t.
The Anne Frank House is among the city’s top tourist attractions, as people from around the world come to see where the young Jewish diarist hid from the Nazis before being discovered and captured. She died of typhus at Bergen-Belsen in 1945, days before the British Army liberated it.
