Anger after Young Labour brands seven resigning MPs ‘cowards and traitors’
Miriam Mirwitch criticises 'entirely inappropriate' tweet from youth group saying it was the 'incorrect response'
The Jewish chair of Young Labour has reacted in anger to a tweet put out by the organisation calling the seven resigning MPs “cowards” and “traitors”.
Miriam Mirwitch, who describes herself as a socialist, said the tweet was “entirely inappropriate,” after the Young Labour said: “Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer we’ll keep the red flag flying here.”
The song is a lyric from ‘The Red Flag’, which is the anthem of the Labour Party and has been sung at party conferences and events by members and MPs.
On the tweet, posted on Monday morning, Mirwitch added: “I do not support it. I am strongly opposed to Labour splits but this is the incorrect response. A member of Young Labour National Committee proposed that we delete this tweet. As this is so contentious, members of the exec are voting.”
JLC head of communications and campaigns, Judith Flacks, who resigned her membership of the Party last year, tweeted in a personal capacity, saying: “You fly that flag all you want, you’ll still be on the wrong side of history.”
