Atletico Madrid face charges over fans’ ‘racist behaviour’ and Nazi-style banner
Supporters of Europa League Final winners may cause club to be disciplined after 3-0 victory
Atletico Madrid are facing a disciplinary charge relating to a Nazi-style banner displayed by fans during their Europa League final win over Marseille, governing body UEFA has announced.
Both clubs are facing charges following fan behaviour during the match, which was won 3-0 by Atletico in Lyon on Wednesday.
Atletico face one charge of “racist behaviour” relating to the banner, while both clubs have been charged with the setting-off of fireworks, which occurred prior to kick-off and was repeated throughout. Some of the game was played in a smoky haze as a consequence.
Marseille must answer a further charge of delaying kick-off as a result of the fireworks and have also been charged with general crowd disturbances, acts of damage and the throwing of objects.
These matters will be dealt with by UEFA’s control, ethics and disciplinary body at a meeting on May 31.
Spanish side Atletico won the match 3-0 with two goals from Antoine Griezmann and one from captain Gabi.
