Benayoun earns record Israel cap in Mexico defeat
Yossi Benayoun became Israel’s most capped player on Wednesday night when he made his 95th appearance for his country.
And as the Israelis lost 3-0 to Mexico in their iconic Azteca Stadium in front of nearly 100,000 fans, it was Benayoun’s record-breaking appearance which was the main talking point for the Israelis.
Speaking after the match, he said: “It is special to break the record in this stadium, this is a definite milestone for me. It is special to break the record in this stadium, especially when the player that shared the record with me, Arik Benado, is here with us as assistant coach.”
Two goals from Miguel Layun – in the 42nd and 61st minute – coupled with Marco Fabian’s 85th minute strike, saw the World Cup-bound Mexicans to a comfortable win.
Israel next travel to the US, to take on Honduras in a friendly on Monday night.
