Bernie Sanders says family’s Shoah deaths drives fight of ‘ugly stain of racism’
American Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders gave a personal vow to fight the ‘stain’ of racism in America, after revealing his father’s family were murdered in concentration camps.
Speaking at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia on Wednesday, he responded to a Muslim student that said she wanted to ‘change the world’, and who was “disgusted” by rhetoric about race in America.
When asked about what he’d do to challenge racism, Sanders replied: “Let me be very personal here if I might. I’m Jewish. My father’s family died in concentration camps. I will do everything that I can to rid this country of the ugly stain of racism which has existed for far too many years.”
Bernie Sanders, 74, who is up against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination, has emerged as one of the surprise stars of the early campaign.
