Big Family Show and Expo: Making a difference
Marking 50 years of giving the key to independence, Jewish Blind & Disabled will celebrate both the past and the future at The Big Family Show & Expo.
2019 is a very special year for Jewish Blind & Disabled as it marks 50 years since the charity was first established to enable people from the age of 18 upwards, who have physical disabilities or impaired vision, to live independently with dignity and choice.
We are delighted to celebrate both the past and the future at The Big Family Show & Expo.
Unfortunately, one in five people in the UK find themselves facing the impact of a diagnosis of a disability or vision impairment whether through illness, accident or age.
Over the past 50 years our specialist state-of-the-art developments of one and two-bedroom mobility apartments have transformed the lives of thousands of people who found themselves in this position.
Not only enabling people to maintain their much-prized independence through the many special features and thoughtful touches, but also providing vital reassurance with support on site and on call 24/7, as well as breaking down the barriers of loneliness and isolation that can accompany a diagnosis of disability.
We are currently looking forward to welcoming yet more new tenants when our latest development of 19 apartments opens later this year. However, as availability of our much sought-after apartments is clearly finite, there are unfortunately many still struggling to cope in accommodation unsuitable to their needs, often with no idea of the products and technologies that could make their lives so much easier.
Now, for the first time in our 50 year history, we are able to use our unparalleled expertise to help people in this position too, with the launch of our Independent Living Advisory Service.
Jewish Blind & Disabled’s Independent Living Advisor visits people living out in the community and makes tailor-made recommendations that could make all the difference to their daily lives.
Where specific aids are not affordable we may even be able fund their cost, with the recipient keeping them for as long as they are needed.
So many people have no idea of the products and technologies that exist, let alone which ones could make all the difference to their lives and to the lives of their families too.
From simple aids like a ‘sock helper’ to more complicated technology such as a smartphone barcode reader providing real tine audio feedback – there are so many ways in which people’s independence can be maintained.
And our Independent Living Advisor can now help them find, and possibly even fund, the products that could transform their lives.
