Chief Rabbi visits National Holocaust Museum
Nottinghamshire institution and the UK's first and only dedicated Shoah museum welcomes rabbinical delegation from London, Manchester and Leeds communities
The UK’s only dedicated Holocaust museum welcomed Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis, Lady Valerie Mirvis and a delegation of rabbis and rebbetzins from communities across the UK for a special visit this week.
Founded more than 30 years ago by the Smith family, the National Holocaust Museum in Nottinghamshire invited the group to learn more about its exhibitions, educational programmes and ongoing work to challenge antisemitism, prejudice and hatred through education.
Representing Jewish communities from London, Manchester and Leeds, the delegation toured the Museum’s The Journey exhibition and main galleries, led by Nicola Strauther, director of Learning & Engagement, and Professor Maiken Umbach, academic advisor.
They also visited the children’s memorial gardens, where Kaddish was recited and heard from Henry Grunwald, the Museum’s Emeritus Chairman, who was joined by two of his grandchildren.
Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis called The National Holocaust Museum “a truly remarkable place, established by a very special family, and it serves as a powerful symbol of hope in challenging times. I know that every one of us will leave feeling inspired, moved by its message, and determined to ensure that more people experience and learn from this extraordinary institution.”
Abi Levitt, interim chief executive of the Museum, said: “We were proud to share the Museum’s work and the remarkable legacy of the Smith family, whose vision created this unique place of learning and remembrance. Their visit reflects our shared commitment to ensuring the lessons of the Holocaust continue to inspire future generations.”
